SpringProxBio-RC

Rugged contactless reader/writer with fingerprint module

Built over popular Sagem MorphoSmart CBM fingerprint reader, SpringProxBio-RC puts together a contactless card reader / writer with biometric authentication or identification features.

SpringProxBio-RC targets TDS Recon rugged handheld computers, running Windows Mobile.

Features of the Biometric subsystem

Sagem MorphoSmart CBM

Fingerprint module, suitable for enrolment, authentication (1:1 or 1:2) and identification (1:N).

  • Optical sensor : 500dpi, 8bits per pixel, surface 13mm x 20mm,
  • Tunable capture quality and FAR (false acceptance rate),
  • Identification mode : internal database stores 1000 templates, 1:N verification in 1 second or less,
  • Authentication mode : 1:1 or 1:2 match in 0.8 second or less,
  • Enrolment mode : 3 to 10 captures per finger ; the exported minutiae is less than 170B -storing 2 fingers is possible even on a small capacity memory card.

N.B. : access to MSO CBM is made through SpringProx's CPU, some functionnality are therefore limited, compared to classical operation on a PC.

Features of the Proximity subsystem

Contactless interface

  • Base station (PCD) compliant with ISO/IEC 14443 standard (1, 2, 3 and 4, both type A and type B),
  • T=CL protocol embedded in coupler's firmware (256-byte frames),
  • Supported contactless smartcards (PICC) (partial list) :
    • NXP MIFARE Classic et MIFARE Plus, MIFARE UltraLight, DESfire, ProX, SmartMX,
    • Infineon SLE66, STMicroelectronics ST19, Atmel AT88,
    • S.T. Microelectronics SR176 et SRiX, ASK CTS256B et CTS512B,
    • Inside Contactless PicoTag et HID iClass (numéro de série seulement),
    • Calypso (incl. Innovatron radio protocol « 14443-B' »)
(some usages of Calypso cards are patented and subject to a license fee - contact us),
    • Tags specified by NFC Forum : Type 1 (Innovision Jewel or Topaz), Type 2 and Type 4,
    • NFC objects or mobile phones in 14443 card emulation mode (standards ISO/IEC 18092 and 23917).
  • RFID transmission : 13.56MHz carrier, baudrate 106 kbps (PCD mode),
  • NXP/Philips Semiconductors RC531 chipset, with CRYPTO1 stream cipher unit and secure storage of MIFARE keys,
  • Card operating distance : 0 to 5cm (depending on the card).

Integration in TDS Recon

  • CompactFlash type I interface,
  • Waterproof and drop resistant ruggedized housing,
  • Powered by the PocketPC itself,
  • Works with PocketPC or Windows Mobile,
  • Plug & Play operation (SpringProxBio-RC is seen as a standard serial communication port, no driver to install),
  • Unified SpringProx API, available in the developer's kit (SDK for SpringProx on PDA).

NB : The PDA is not provided with the SpringProxBio-RC.

A few applications...

  • Airport or highest-security level building : on-the-field control of credentials and fingerprints (either private access control card or TWIC smartcard),
  • Verification of electronic travel documents, driving licences, ID cards...,
  • Authentication of handheld owner before VPN connection or access to restricted data,
  • Fingerprint-based electronical "signature".
